When it comes to burning fossil fuels, natural gas is the cleanest. When these units are in use, they emit reduced amounts of sulfur, nitrogen, and greenhouse gasses such as carbon dioxide. Saving the environment has never been easier.
How Does a Natural Gas Generator Work?
Most generators work on the same principle. The internal combustion engine first injects fuel and air that has combined into what’s called a combustion chamber. At this point a piston begins to compress the mix. Next, a spark plug will ignite the fuel which in turn drives a piston down while turning the crankshaft. As soon as this happens the crankshaft begins to spin the rotor which is in an electromagnetic field. This generates electric currents which can charge appliances, batteries, tools, and a wide range of equipment based on the size of the generator.
Although natural gas generators work very much like their gas counterparts, they have one significant difference. Since they are burning gaseous fuel instead of liquid, the units have to be equipped with a carburetor. A carburetor is a small device which blends a specific amount of air and fuel and then injects the mixture into cylinders in the engine.
Natural Gas vs. Traditional Generators
Some people wonder why anyone would want a gas generator when traditional ones are so convenient. Other than the benefits to the environment, a natural gas can be used in times of emergency when the alternatives may not be accessible. Take for instance a natural disaster or a bad snowstorm where people are stranded at home with the roads impassable. If you run out of natural gas you can either get it from your home if it’s got natural gas pipelines or you can even use the gas from your outdoor grill. Another benefit is that as long as the container doesn’t lose its integrity, the gas can remain in the can for years without having its composition change.
